Biomonitoring sources on the Web include: Environmental
Health Laboratory, National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH),
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), conducts CDC's Biomonitoring
Program. CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) produces toxicological profiles that characterize the toxicological and adverse health effects for more than 250 hazardous substances. CDC's National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) makes available a wide range of
data on the health of the U.S. population. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), administers the interagency National Toxicology Program evaluating agents of public health concern through testing programs and development of improved testing technology. NIH's
National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers a collection of specialized
information and resources on toxicology and environmental health, including
databases, a toxicology tutorial, an interactive guide to commonly encountered
toxic substances, and references to scientific literature. FacsNet provides
reporting tools and tutorials for journalists, including articles on epidemiology,
risk assessment and other topics. Toxicological Sciences, the official journal of the Society of Toxicology, publishes original research articles in all areas of toxicology, the study of adverse effects of chemical, physical or biological agents on living organisms and the ecosystem. Recent studies on specific agents may be found by searching for articles or browsing the archive. The Occupational Health and Safety Research Institute (IRSST) of Montreal, Canada, conducts research and provides a database of over 1000 research reports on topics including chemical substances and biological agents in the workplace, accidents, musculoskeletal disorders, noise and vibration, protective equipment, occupational rehabilitation, and safety of industrial tools, machines and processes. The National Research Center for Environment and Health, GmbH (Forschungszentrum für Umwelt und Gesundheit, GSF) provides a very useful German-language website on human biomonitoring. The GSF is a research institution of the German Government and the State of Bavaria within the Helmholtz Association of Research Centers with approximately 1700 associates in 25 institutes and departments. Further information about the GSF may be found at their English-language website.
